In this blog I am going to give you not only the history of the Mather Inn here in Ishpeming Michigan where I reside now but also the family tree of the Mathers as well.
The top two pictures are that of the Nelson House that stood there before the Mather Inn was built and the next is the Mather House of when it was first built and the next is what it looks like today. I can see the Mather Inn from both my bedroom and my living room windows.
In 1875 Robert Nelson who is the founder of Ishpeming built a hotel called the Barnum House(which I have no picture for). Four years after he built it the Barnum House burnt down. He decided to rebuild once again and call it the Nelson house which burnt down in 1928.
This is William G Mather who was the Cleveland Cliffs president. He financed the construction of the Mather Inn which opened in 1932. In 1959 the Inn served as housing for the cast of the movie Anatomy of a murder.
William G Mather was born September 22nd, 1857 and died April 5th, 1957. He attended Trinity College in Hartford Connecticut where he did damage to the Chapel there. He then offered to build a new Chapel for them on the new campus location in Hartford. The Chaple and Trinity College still stand today. Now you see Trinity College in haunted and it is said that a student committed suicide within the Chapel. I also understand that Mather Inn is also haunted but have not been in there to check it out. The Inn is now being renovated into apartments.
Here are some screen shots of the Mather family tree and you will see how they lead to Richard Mather, Increase Mather and Cotton Mather. In this family tree is Rev Samuel Mather that til this day haunts a house that I investigated.
Now for some reason where ever I seem to go the Mather name follows me. This is kind of spooky if you ask me. The Mather family descended here from England and their first church was located in Boston before they went to Salem for the Witch Trials. Many people died during the trials and some were even innocent and were killed for no reason.
You may ask why I have such a strong connection and to tell you the truth I really don’t know but I can tell you this…..it happened when I investigated this house back in 2004. Rev Samuel Mather is haunting that house. He won’t leave no matter what you do. He hates women and children and has killed many along with slaves.
Now as the story goes is that Cotton Mather handed the property down to Eliakim Mather whom built the house and then he gave it to Rev Samuel Mather whom still taunts people who try to live there. The house is now empty and has been for the past three years. NO ONE can live in it. What makes it worse is that Rev Samuel Mather is buried in the cemetery up the street and behind one of the churches he preached at.
Well I hope you all enjoyed this blog and there will be more coming like this one. Please feel free to comment and share. Thank you for your support.
